VASILIS SPERANTZAS was born in 1938 in Athens. He studied painting at the Paris School of Fine Arts (1956-1962). After completing his studies he remained in the French capital and from 1976 to 1988 he taught lithography at the same school. In 1988 he returned to Greece, where he lives and works to this day. In 1966 he presented his first solo exhibition at the Astor Gallery in Athens, then organizing solo exhibitions both in Greece and abroad. He has also taken part in Parisian salons, as well as in group and international painting and engraving exhibitions. Speranzas has established a completely personal artistic idiom. In his work he represents a world that combines familiar and everyday elements with an unreal, dreamy and, often, erotic atmosphere, where the female figure dominates. Naked most of the time and often lying down, alone or with a man, it is rendered without a realistic mood, with bright colors and plasticity of the tumors and is depicted in interiors with an urban character and elements of the past. All the forms in his works have the dimension of a symbol more, as they share common and not personal characteristics. Drawing on elements from archaic, Byzantine and folk art, together with many lessons of European painting, it forms a personal mythology of color richness, intensity of shades and clean outlines. Along with painting, he also deals with engraving, especially lithography, creating compositions with a strongly expressionist character.
